The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera
John Irving (via wrists)

“April 1st is absolutely the worst day on the Internet. I’m going outside.”
Have you ever wanted to tell someone everything about yourself at once? Just so you don’t have to worry about doing it later, explaining in increments, slowly revealing one piece of information at a time. Kind of like ripping off a bandage all at once. Getting it over with really quickly, without hesitation. Maybe that’s what’s worrisome about getting to know someone. The constant fear that the next thing you tell them will be the last, that there’s just something so unbearable about yourself that it will be an instant deal breaker.
I think it’s this slow reveal that’s most terrifying about letting someone in. Because there’s always the prospect that they could not like what they find out half-way down the road. And then you’re there, partway open, not sure how to move forward or go backwards, and all that’s left is uncertainty.
And yet, when you get here, you are not given instructions. No one tells you that heart A is meant to slot into heart B. There are no diagrams about how you are meant to live each day or directions on how to assemble some semblance of happiness. You are not even told what colours to paint your feelings or, given a purpose and a reason for your life.
You have to make all of it up. You have to make all of it, yourself.
